Prometheus Radio Broadcast: March 2010

This spring and summer, Prometheus will be conducting massive outreach to connect social justice organizations to participatory radio. We have already embarked on a 5 week, 12 state tour and are preparing to travel to major national convergences such as the Allied Media Conference and the US Social Forum. Please help us to continue this work by becoming a Sustaining Funder.

Prometheus Hits the Road

ImageThis week, Cory Fischer-Hoffman and Andalusia Knoll of the Prometheus Radio Project, along with Maka Muñez of Palabra Radio, set out on a nationwide outreach tour—Making Waves: Transmitting Popular Power. The tour will move through 12 states in 5 weeks, empowering over 40 social justice and immigrant rights groups with the tools to take back the airwaves!

LPFM Bill Poised for Passage

The Local Community Radio Act is now poised to pass!  On March 10, 2010 S592 was finally placed on the calendar and reported out of Committee, making the bill ready for a vote of approval from the Senate. With this bureaucratic piece of process behind us, we are just a few steps away from passing the Local Community Radio Act. After passing out of the Full House of Representatives in December, all that remains is for the bill to be voted out of the Senate and then signed into law by the President.

AMC and USSF in Detroit

ImageImage This June, the Prometheus Radio Project will be participating in two amazing gatherings in Detroit, Michigan. The first is the Allied Media Conference (AMC), which will take place from June 18-20, and focuses on transforming communities through media-based organizing. At the AMC, Prometheus will host a radio transmitter build and a live radio broadcast. Along with People's Production House, we are organizing a “radio track,” Radioactive: From the Streets to the Airwaves, which will guide people through the nuts and bolts of radio production. The radio track will share skills such as interviewing, recording, and editing audio, as well as feature a discussion on r adio as a tool for social justice organizers. Those who complete this training will then have the opportunity to produce radio content during the US Social Forum, taking place June 22nd-26th in Detroit. The USSF will bring together people from social movements all across the US and world to explore solutions to the economic and ecological crisis and work to build a powerful multi-racial, multi-sectorial, inter-generational, diverse, inclusive, internationalist movement that transforms this country and changes history. See you in Detroit!

March Forward with CIW!

ImageOur allies at the Coalition for Immokalee Workers (CIW) are marching across Florida for farmworker freedom April 16-18, 2010. The march starts in Tampa and continues to the Lakeland, Fla. headquarters of the grocery chain Publix Super Markets, Inc.

The CIW will bring along the Florida Modern Day Slavery Museum, a brand-new traveling exhibit housed in a replica of the 24-foot cargo truck where workers were kept in captivity for years. The CIW has successfully attacked slavery and unjust working conditions by targeting the restaurants and grocery stores that buy the tomatoes picked by workers in slavery or otherwise exploitative conditions. After a landmark victory against Taco Bell, they won workers' rights agreements with McDonald’s, Whole Foods, Burger King and Subway.

Prometheus was proud to help launch the CIW's low power Radio Conciencia, which broadcasts to farmworkers in Creole, Spanish, and Mayan languages. Support the CIW by joining the march or spreading the news!
